What Is Comparative Certification?

If your officer has received basic training in another state or while employed as a police officer, he may not necessarily need to go through the entire basic training curriculum; he/she may be eligible for a status of Comparative Compliance.  In determining whether to waive all or a portion of the required police basic training program, the Police Officer Standards and Training Council shall evaluate in comparison to current requirements the quality and extent of the candidate’s (1) previous basic training and certification as a police officer; (2) formal, professional and in-service training and education in law enforcement or criminal justice, and (3) length of service and field experience as a police officer.  The council may waiver those portions of the police basic training program for which a candidate demonstrates (a) the satisfactory completion of a substantial equivalent training or educational program in another state of jurisdiction, or (b) a length of service with field experience sufficient to establish a practical mastery of the required skills, or a satisfactory combination of both.  Please refer to the CT POSTC website or direct inquiries to the POSTC Certification Division, William Klein, Compliance Officer, 203-427-2606, E-Mail:  William.Klein@po.state.ct.us for further information.  You may not enroll your officer into this program without pre-approval from POSTC.

SCJTN can train your new hire in any and every area that POSTC allows us to.  There are many benefits of obtaining this training through our organization, some of which are:   (1) your officer(s) will receive the training quickly allowing you to get him/her out on the road without delay.  This will save you money in the long run, because you’ll be paying your officers to patrol rather than paying them to be trained; (2) because of the small ratios between student and instructor, the instructor can focus on the individual’s needs;  (3) classes are being instructed to students with policing backgrounds, and the instructors know this; (4) as with all of our programs, our instructors are experts in their respective fields and are POSTC certified and (5) SCJTN handles administrative end of the training.

When you are in receipt of the eligibility letter from POSTC for your officer(s) to participate in comparative certification training, we can start scheduling instructors immediately.  In an effort to keep your cost down, we try to coordinate these trainings with as many departments as possible.  If you know you’ll be needing this training in the near future, you should call us right away to find out if another department is scheduling and we can try to combine efforts and save money for everyone involved.  Prices will vary as will locations of the training and the instructors… please call for a price quote.
